Jessie Buckley says film industry must nurture grassroots ‘rather than giving so much weight to an Oscar campaign’

Jessie Buckley, who took home the best actress Oscar earlier this year, spoke at the BFI and Chanel film-maker awards, where she highlighted the value of protest and questioned the industry's priorities.

The performer raised doubts about whether the film sector overvalues Oscar campaigns while overlooking the development of new talent, arguing that more could be achieved by fostering filmmakers at the community level.

During the London ceremony for the BFI and Chanel film-maker awards, Buckley addressed remarks made by John Malkovich, who claimed that Oscar campaigns have become the sole method for drawing audiences to theaters.
